My Sweet Girl

198|365: Posing

When Scout was still a puppy, she and I (along with Montego) housesat for Sarah and Doug (and Biscuit and Bella) for about a week. Biscuit and Bella love ice from the fridge dispenser, and since Scout was an impressionable little puppy, she picked up the habit.

We didn’t have an ice dispenser in our rental here in Minnesota, so it’s been funny to watch that little quirk come back out since we’ve been in our new house. Regardless of where she is (or how long it’s been since she just had a piece of ice), when she hears the grinding of the dispenser, she comes skittering over to the fridge.

Scout has her naughty qualities — she barks at strangers and we’re always a little bit unsure of her around unknown female dogs — but she is just such a joy. She smiles, actually smiles, and you can’t stay mad at her when she does. If we start dancing, she tries to dance with us and she even knows the command “dance.” (My mean husband won’t let me post the video I took of her dancing.)

I just love her.

Sir Eller Hiccupsalot

(Yes, that’s his real name.)

So, I’m doing this little photo project with Eller in 2010, and I’ve managed to actually keep up. (Shocker. Probably because it’s weekly, not daily.)

I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to get a variety of images with him, since his daily routine involves sleeping as much as possible, holding still and sticking out his tongue. But I needn’t have worried.

He’s become a stellar little model …

17/52: What's so funny, Eller?

He really is full of personality. I thought he would put up the biggest fuss about no longer being allowed on the couch, but he’s adapted quite well. We threw a dog bed in the corner of the living room, and it’s like he knew it was just for him. (I mean, it’s not just for him, but Eller seems to think everything in the world is just for him.)

Even though, really, he can sleep anywhere …

14/52: I think Eller likes the new house

Since moving into the new house, we’ve been taking him and Scout (rarely all four, though it has happened), over to the nearby dog park. When you walk in, you can go right to walk the long trail around the multi-acre fenced area, or go left up a little hill to where most folks gather and there’s a water station. Well, typically we go right to get some exercise, but Eller knows if he goes left there are people to fawn over him and give him treats. So often, as soon as we enter, he charges ahead, up the hill, to his crowd of fans who literally (literally) cheer his name.

It’s a little annoying, because come on, dude. But really, I get it. Dog’s a star.

Dog Life — Foto Friday

Buddy Comedy

I rented a wide angle lens (the Canon 20mm 2.8) to take pictures of our new house, and managed to sneak in a few dog shots while I had it.

This was taken in our old back yard. I put the camera on the ground and crossed my fingers that it’d focus!

My Beautiful Girl — Foto Friday

77|365: Beautiful (Happy) Girl

I wish I could remember where I heard the phrase “heart dog,” because it’s such the perfect way to sum up the way I feel about Scout. Don’t misunderstand, I loved, and have loved, every dog I’ve ever had. Thinking about the day we have to say goodbye to Montego makes me me tear up at my desk. I love that dumb, grumpy dog.

But I’m not connected, not tied, to her the way that I am tied to Scout. Maybe it’s the way Scout came into my life—a smiling puppy on my doorstep, a gift, an unexpected treasure. Maybe it’s because she took me to the dog park every Saturday and that is where Aaron and I met. Maybe it’s because she’s just so darn JOYFUL. I don’t know.

But she makes my heart smile with her smile. Sometimes when she’s gets all settled into her dog bed at night, I make Aaron sit up and look at her. “Look at how cute she looks!” I say. (This usually happens if she’s doing something squee-tastic like crossing her paws or resting her chin on Eller’s back.) He humors me, but to him, she’s just a dog laying on a dog bed.

But to me she’s my heart, covered in black and white fur with sparkling brown eyes and a naughty streak as wide as the Mississippi.

Sunday, Sunny Sunday

Today was the kind of day Minnesotans wait all winter for. The sun was shining, the sky was blue, and the temperature felt warm enough to lay on a beach somewhere. (Not really, but it felt like it.)

When it gets warm like this, Minnesotans pour out of their houses like ants out of a crushed ant hill. We saw our neighbors riding bikes, on motorcycles, walking dogs, jogging in shorts and T-shirts. It’s like everyone knows—instinctively—that another winter is behind us, but you best enjoy the weather, because another one will come (eventually).

We took Scout and Eller down to the lake for the first time since late fall, and they had a blast. Eller especially. It was like he had an extra little “spring” in his step.

The lake is still frozen, but it’s slushy and mushy. (And still totally safe to walk on close to the beach.)

They ran and scampered and slid.

And Eller posed for me, the big, sweet boy.

Once they were sufficiently tired (and my shoes were sufficiently soaked from the melting ice) we came back to house to unload the dogs and change before driving over to our new neighborhood. Our new house is in a subdivision that is surrounded by lots of parks and trails, so thought it would be fun to go on a long walk over there to get to know the area a little better.

Back of the House

We walked around the subdivision and looked closer at all the houses. (I was specifically trying to figure out what kind of window treatments our neighbors have!) We walked from our front porch to the dog park, and it only took 7.5 minutes. Definitely close enough for pre-work trips over there in the mornings on weekdays. (But maybe with just me and Scout. We’ll see if we can rouse anyone else early in the mornings.)

We are so ready and excited to move. Only 3 more weeks!
