A Room of His Own — Harry’s Nursery

The nursery, a labor of love if there ever was one. When we moved into this house last April, my mom kept referring to the little front bedroom as “the nursery.” After the third or fourth time I had to correct her and say, “You mean the third bedroom?” It was just too painful to refer to it as the nursery when I had no idea if it would ever truly actually be a nursery.

But as soon as we started the adoption process, the nursery became my thing. I searched blogs and wrote down ideas and spent, I hate to tell you, hours searching for items on Craigslist.

It’s still not “done” — I have items to hang about his crib and I actually got different curtains at JC Penny yesterday — but it’s done enough share.

I would say without any further ado, but there has already been a little ado, I’d say. So here it is …

The giraffe was one of the first things I bought once we started the process, and he kind of became the inspiration for the room. He and blue dog (a gift) sit in my grandmother’s egg basket. Literally the basket she used to collect eggs 60+ years ago:

The dresser. I searched high and wide for just the right dresser. We went to Babies R Us to check to see what height would make a good changing table, and I knew it couldn’t be too long, because we were working with limited space. I found this piece early on, but they were asking too much ($175). After a few weeks they called and said if we were still interested, we could have it for $100. Score. I painted it white with Valspar’s satin finish spray paint, put the original hardware back on it, and done. It was very beat up and required a bit of sanding, and there are still quite a few dings you can see, but I love it.

The crib. If you follow me on Twitter you know the saga of the crib. Originally I wanted a white Jenny Lind, but couldn’t find one anywhere. They were on backorder on every online vendor, and BRU said they couldn’t even order me one, because their system showed they are discontinued. Finally I went back to the drawing board and found this. It was a gift from my dad and stepmom, and I adore it. (It’s by babyletto.) It converts to a toddler bed, so hopefully we’ll use it for several years. I wasn’t going to do bumpers at all (safety), but this is the Dwell Studio for Target pattern I’ve had my eye on for years, and they marked it all for clearance, so it was like $15. And since he doesn’t actually sleep in here right now, I felt okay spending $15 “for show.”

This room is the first space you see when you come up our stairs, and it makes me feel so happy to see it. Not just because what it represents (a baby lives in our house!), but that it is exactly what I saw in my mind. I am not an interior designer (by any stretch), and most of what I wanted to do I saw somewhere else first, but I am pretty proud of it, I must say.

Harry seems to enjoy it too:

Holiday Home Tour 2010

We are literally snowed in today (watched a neighbor get stuck a foot off their driveway), so what better to do than share with you our decorated house?

I want to start this off with the caveat that the only way my house is decorated this year is because my mom was here for a week. She fed and snuggled the baby while I strung 1,000 lights on our tree and unpacked all our decorations.

So let’s get started …

Entry way:

Hall Table

Baker’s Rack in kitchen:

Baker's Rack

In the frame is our 2008 holiday card, our first married Christmas. A lot has changed since then! Fewer dogs, more humans in our family now. The pitcher is from Romania, and stays there year round.

Dining room:

Buffet

This is the (Craigslist find) buffet behind our dining room table. It is one of our best CL finds to date, and I just love how it turned out! The white pitcher was my grandmother’s wash stand pitcher (literally used for that purpose). It stays here year round, and I swap out the silks in it. (Or have nothing in it.) The print typically hangs in our living room, but it lives where the tree is now, so I moved it over here. The Patience Brewster bulldog was an eBay purchase our first married Christmas. We love her Krinkle collection, and come on, how could I not get this? The little snowpeople are salt and pepper shakers, and were purchased by my mom at a 5 & Dime store in the 1960s. The strand of garland I got at HomeGoods this year. It’s the only new addition here.

Mantle:

Mantle

No stocking for Master Harry yet, though I have been told one is on its way. (Sarah’s grandmother made these for us the Christmas we were engaged, and is so amazing she already knitted one for Harry. Hope it gets here soon!) The figures are all Jim Shore. My mom gave us the nativity one two years ago, and then Aaron purchased the other two Santas — one this year and one last. I think we’ll get one more next year, and then that is enough of a collection for me.

Tree!

We only buy Fraser Firs, and we were able to get an 8-foot tree this year. (Typically I’ve had to get only 6- or 7-foot trees.) Here is is all lit, pre-ornaments:

Tree!

We have a tradition where one of us purchases an ornament for the other and presents it on Thanksgiving. This year it was to be my turn, but in October Aaron said that he found a fun one, and could he go two years in a row. This is the 2010 ornament:

Like I said, we love Patience Brewster’s Krinkle collection! Here are a couple more:

Unpacking this one brought some tears:

Fall Decor — Sunday Snapshot

It’s Fall! I’ve slowly been decorating for about a week now. It’s feel cool outside, and cozy indoors.

The entryway table. The lighted pumpkins are from Target. (Of course.)

The mantle:

Our new Craigslist buffet ($150!). We love it, even though I have yet to move any of our china upstairs to go in it. The pitcher was my grandmother’s. It’s an old washstand pitcher. Perfect for some fall foliage.

268|365: Fall stuff.

New little finds today at HomeGoods. I’ll put the sweet little bird on the hall table when it’s time to switch everything back to non-seasonal decorations. (The wicker pumpkin is also from Target.)

Show Us Your Life — Master Bedroom

Kelly at Kelly’s Corner hosts “Show us Your Life” on Fridays (so I’m a day late!). This week is master bedrooms.

Someday we’ll figure out a paint color (probably a latte color, but maybe Silver Sage?), and get curtains. But for now, new-house-white walls it is… .

This was an ornament my mom put on a Christmas present a few years ago …

The view into our room from the doorway:

LRedit-5137

Our bed & bedding were our big purchases after the wedding, thanks to the generousity of our friends and family. The mattress is a Sleep Number bed (we love it); the frame is Pottery Barn; and the bedding is from Martha Stewart’s line at Macy’s. The windows above our bed were a late add during the building process, and almost every day we remark on how glad we are that we added them!

LRedit-5138

The bedside tables were tables from my grandmother’s house that I just recently spray painted white. The little crystal lamps were also hers. Eventually we’d like to get the bedside tables that go with our bed, but that is pretty low on the list, so these work for now! (Oh we have so many books! These are just the ones we’re currently reading, or on our to-be-read list.)

The view sitting on the foot of our bed — into the master bathroom and my dresser to the right. (The dresser was also from my grandmother; she inherited it from her eldest sister who passed away in the 1960s. I love it, even though it doesn’t really go with anything else.)

Nursery Inspiration

One of my new “hobbies,” as it were, is researching nursery decor. Oh, it’s so inspirational. (But also a little demoralizing because our budget for this is wee. See: adoption.)

There is a split camp among prospective adoptive parents regarding the nursery. Some feel as if they need to nest and prepare for the baby. It brings reality to the “expectant” part of waiting on a child. Others leave the room bare, because the thought of seeing an empty nursery for an indefinite period of time is too difficult.

I am in the former group. I have a great urge and desire to nest, and it gives me a satisfying feeling of preparing for our baby, wherever he may be. And it’s physical—there will be painting and moving and cleaning. It feels good to physically prepare for Little Bit, as I am not the one blessed to grow him.

I have both a clear and a muddled picture of what I want in a nursery. I say clear and muddled, because though I have a nice mental image, much of it may not be possible for us. (We have oak trim, not white. The upstairs is carpeted, not hardwood.)

What I want: clean, traditional with touches of modern, classic, simple. I want it to feel beautiful and lovely. I want it to feel like a baby’s room, not a big kid’s room. (As many nurseries do.) I want to buy as many used/vintage pieces as I can and repurpose them. I don’t want a theme per se, and I am mostly drawn to white, gray, light tan, yellow.

And obviously, it needs to be gender neutral, as though I refer to him as a he, doing so is just for simplicity/consistency.

Here are some images I am in love with today …

Love the elephant and the light fixture. If I were to have a theme, it would be elephants. (So beautfiully gray!)

Love the vintage dresser and that wall color:

The Nursery{image by catharticflux}

The image below is more tan/white than gray/white, but I really like it, because it’s likely more of what we’ll go for, what with our oak trim and all.

{image from decor pad}

I would really love to be able to do wainscotting, and Aaron is open to the idea, but again…oak trim. Not sure how white wainscotting would look against oak trim.

{image from color me happy}

Oh my goodness. The old barn siding on the wall? LOVE.

I love this type of bookshelf, and if we have the space, I definitely would like to do this.

And finally, one of my favorite nurseries of all time. Please go check out the entire nursery on Flickr. I love everything about it!

crib

{photo by thebline}

What I know for sure: we will have a white (likely Jenny Lind) crib, a white dresser to use as a changing table (IKEA if I cannot find a suitable on on Craigslist to paint), and a fun yellow & white rug to go over the carpet.

Edited to add pictures of Marlo’s nursery, of course!

If you have images of your child’s nursery online anywhere, I would LOVE to see them.
